CA Labs provides accredited asbestos analysis of bulk building materials, air, dust, vermiculite, and drinking water by polarized light (PLM), transmission electron (TEM), and phase contrast (PCM) microscopy at both our Carrollton, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana laboratories.

PLM — Polarized Light Microscopy
PLM is the primary method for identifying and quantifying asbestos in bulk building materials such as drywall systems, floor tile, mastics, plaster, and insulation. When a sample falls near the one-percent regulatory threshold, we offer point counting and gravimetric reduction for a more definitive result. Analyses are performed on Leica DM750 Pol microscopes, with four to five stations at each laboratory to provide the manpower for larger projects without sacrificing turnaround.

TEM — Transmission Electron Microscopy
TEM provides the highest resolution available for asbestos analysis, confirming fiber identity by morphology, electron diffraction, and elemental analysis. We rely on it for AHERA clearance air samples, bulk confirmation of non-friable and organically bound materials, dust characterization, vermiculite, and drinking water. Our Dallas laboratory operates two JEOL transmission electron microscopes, and a Cressington 208C high-vacuum turbo carbon coater shortens sample preparation to ensure fast, reliable turnaround times.

PCM — Phase Contrast Microscopy
PCM is the standard method for airborne fiber counting during abatement projects and personal exposure monitoring, delivering rapid results for daily air clearance and industrial hygiene sampling. Analyses are performed on a Leica DM750 phase contrast microscope, and both the PLM and PCM programs are overseen by analysts who have completed NIOSH 582E training.
